Today I want to share with you some thoughts I have on what we can learn from God about creativity. In Francis A Schaeffers book “Art and the Bible” he says: “The christian is the one whose imagination should fly beyond the stars” In reality I think that for the most part our imaginations are stunted and we need to turn back to our source for fresh perspective and inspiration. Here are some ideas that can be a part of the process of inspiration not just for an artist, but in all areas of our life where we need to be creative.
- Creativity is God like
The very first thing we learn about God in the bible is that he created (Genesis 1:1). Not only that but he goes on to say in Genesis 1:27 (Message Version)
“God created human beings, he created them godlike, Reflecting God’s nature.”
We have been made with the nature of a creative and we see that surrounding us in all the work of mans hand in the world – buildings, science, technology, art works and books to name a few.
- Creation is Beautiful
In Genesis 2:8 God created the Garden of Eden saying “ …trees, beautiful to look at and good to eat…” This beauty is innate to who God is. In every thing and every where he creates beauty whether some one will see it or not. As creatives we need to foster this appreciation of beauty as a reflection of God in our lives
- Creativity is Diverse
Just as we can see that there is no one around us that is exactly the same, just as we have heard time and again that no snowflake or grain of sand is the same as any other, we can see that creativity is diverse. Because we are all unique individuls, we also offer a unique creative prespective, and different ways to do the same thing.
- Creativity Can and Does Communication
Psalms 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” Just as God can be seen through what he has made, so what we create communicates who we are. Our art work can show the viewer what we see as important and our perspective or interpretation of reality“Art has tremendous power to shape culture and touch the human heart. It’s artefacts embody the the ideas and desires of the coming generation. This means that what is happening in the arts today is prophetic of what will happen in our culture tommorrow.” Art of Arts Sake – PG Ryken
- Creativity is Intelligent
Jeremiah 10:11-13 “… established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens…” When we combine intelligence with our creativity it should have a powerful effect on what we are doing. If we are innovative with the basic laws of art we can create something dynamic and influential.
- Creation is Valuable
Psalm 8:3-9 “… what is man that you are mindful of him… Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings… You have given him dominion over the works of your hands.” Psalm 139:14 “… for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” We give the things we create value just by creating them.
- Creativity Can Make Seen the Unseen Things of God
Romans 1:19-20 “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.” Art can help us see things as we have never seen them before or make things visible that we can not see. This is the job of a creative.
I hope you have been inspired by these thoughts. I would love to hear from you in the comments if you have other ideas that can be added to this list.
